An Ohio woman accused of killing her three young sons over a 13 month period said that she smothered each boy with a blanket over the face because she "didn't want to see them suffering."

Brittany Pilkington also said in the recorded police interview that she was depressed and worried her sons would eventually become abusive toward women.

Her lawyers charged that the confession had been obtained unconstitutionally, but prosecutors said that she knowingly agreed to be interviewed without a lawyer.

Authorities said, that Pilkington suffocated her children out of jealousy at the attention her husband gave them.

Pilkington provided specific details on the murders during interviews with authorities that were played in court on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

She recounted how she killed 3 months old Niall in July 2014 in their Bellefontaine home. She said 4 years old Gavin was kicking his legs as he was suffocated and he took "a few minutes" to die in April 2015, according to the newspaper. And she admitted she took the life of 3-month-old Noah four months later.

According to the Dispatch, She said that she used a blanket because "I didn't want to see it. I didn't want to see them suffering."

After each child died, she had told authorities that the kids simply stopped breathing.

She said she felt like killing herself before taking the lives of her children. According to the Dispatch she told investigators, "I should have hurt myself”.

The man who had married and impregnated her had been her stepfather. Joseph Pilkington pleaded guilty to a sex charge earlier this year and must register as a sex offender.

Brittany Pilkington, 24 years old, has pleaded not guilty in the three murders. She could face the death penalty if convicted.
